TATA Motors Passenger Vehicles’ (TMPV) first shipment arrived at the Durban Port on 21 August 2025, signalling the brand’s official return to the South African automotive market.
The shipment of a total of 485 units, including Tiago, Punch, Curvv, and Harrier models, was distributed to dealerships nationwide, with sales expected to start from September. TMPV says the company’s return to South Africa signals its confidence in the country’s economic potential and the strength of its automotive sector.
Thato Magasa, CEO of Motus Holding’s TMPV South Africa distribution business, said: “[Thursday’s] arrival at Durban Port is more than just the delivery of vehicles – it’s the start of a new chapter for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles in South Africa. This shipment demonstrates our belief in the market, our commitment to customers, and our readiness to contribute to economic growth through local partnerships and job creation.”
Transnet’s managing executive at the Durban Terminals, Earle Peters said, “Tata’s first shipment since 2019 through one of our terminals gives us great honour and encourages a sense of continued commitment to delivering a world-class service that supports our customers and strengthens South Africa’s competitiveness.”
Transnet Port Terminals’ (TPT) Durban Car Terminal is South Africa’s largest, with an annual throughput capacity of 520,000 fully built units. TPT says recent improvements at the terminal include:
- The digital conversion of over 60% of the Durban Car Terminal’s parking bays, enhancing the movement of both imported and exported cars in a yard that accommodates over 12,500 vehicles.
- High-tech bar-coded labels, scannable with handheld devices which enhances digital yard management.
- Daily integrated meetings with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and other stakeholders.
The terminal exports a total of seven models made in South Africa for 140 markets globally.
