THE COVID-19 pandemic and its economic and social repercussions clearly showed the importance of governance within organisations and nations.
Whether in the sphere of defending public health and safety, ensuring adherence to lockdown regulations or keeping the wheels of commerce and industry turning – governance arrangements played a critical role.
To take stock of governance responses and developing recommendations on a range of public governance topics, the Durban ICC will be hosting the Durban ICC Governance and Technologies in a Disrupted Global Economy Summit on 19th September 2022.
This is a must-attend, one-day event designed to help leaders from the corporate sector, academics, managers of NGOs and leaders from all levels of government share in lessons and experiences that will serve as a catalyst for positive processes ensuring accountability, transparency and responsiveness during a global calamity.
The summit will look at why ethics are important in good governance and how to improve governance and accountability.
The keynote address titled “Improving Governance and Accountability in Government” will be delivered by Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
South Africa’s “Guru of Governance” Professor Mervyn King will speak on “Governance and Accountability in a Disrupted Global Economy”.
Prof King is Chairman of the King Committee on Corporate Governance in South Africa, which has produced the ‘King Reports’ which set the bar on corporate governance. He is also Chairman of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC), Chairman Emeritus of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and a member of the Private Sector Advisory Group to the World Bank on Corporate Governance.
The auditor-general, Ms Tsakani Maluleke, whose mandate is to check the spending of public funds and resources by looking at whether these were used for the intended purposes with regard to economy, efficiency and effectiveness, will speak on “Making Governance Principles a Culture”.
Ms Lindiwe Rakharebe, CEO of the Durban ICC which has arranged the Governance and Technologies in a Disrupted Global Economy Summit, said the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that good governance is a non-negotiable pursuit for national well-being.
