New eco-friendly packaging brand aims to replace plastic

DURBAN-based Shave & Gibson Packaging has launched a new brand within the company, Earthpak, with the stated aim of replacing plastic, polystyrene and metal food trays and cartons.

“We chose the name Earthpak as we wanted a brand that would resonate with the general public. We tried to find a name that was self-explanatory for what we are providing - a packaging solution that will leave a gentle footprint on our earth," said Commercial Manager Richard Downes, Shave & Gibson

“Manufactured from sustainable and certified paperboard, we will provide retailers with the first South African workable solution to eliminate non-biodegradable products. We are offering suppliers and consumers an alternative to plastic and polystyrene packaging - one that doesn't have a detrimental effect on the environment.”

Earthpak trays and containers are constructed from cardboard-based materials with a choice of coatings which, according to the company, create a barrier that is resistant to grease or liquids, allowing direct and safe contact with food. They can be used for applications from freezer (-40°C) to oven (220°C) and microwave.

They are manufactured from sustainable FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper, in uncoated as well as water-based, PLA, PET and PE coated configurations.
