METRO Towlines and Recoveries, a family-owned towing and recovery business in Durban, has marked 25 years of partnership with FAW Trucks Southern Africa. The enduring relationship stands as a testament to unwavering customer loyalty and exceptional vehicle durability. Operating for four decades, the company attributes much of its success to the robust performance of its fleet, particularly the pioneering FAW 9.140FL rollback truck, which continues to power critical operations and exemplifies FAW’s commitment to going the extra mile for long-term client support.
Acquired in October 2000 as South Africa’s first FAW rollback, the FAW 9.140FL model was selected for its affordability, in comparison to its direct competitors, with standard advanced features like air conditioning and power steering. Owner Muhammad Balil recalls the instant connection: “I told my wife and mother-in-law; this is the one. You won’t find another vehicle like this.” Nicknamed his ‘baby’, the truck remains fully operational, delivering impressive fuel efficiency of 7L per 100km when driven steadily. Balil praises its drivability: “It feels like driving a car”, and highlights its prowess on long hauls, such as six-to-seven-hour trips to Johannesburg.
The vehicle’s recent refurbishment has turned heads, with passersby mistaking it for a new model. Operational manager Fathima Osman, daughter of owner Sema Gavour, emphasises its pristine condition: “People think it’s a new truck… It’s smart-looking, unusual compared to other trucks on the road. When we go to a customer, neatness matters. This truck is always in tip-top shape.”
This flagship truck laid the foundation for fleet expansion, including two additional FAW 9.130FL models from 2012 and 2013. Balil credits the 9.140FL for the company’s growth: “This truck has brought us to where we are today.” The family’s advocacy is evident in recent referrals, leading one business to purchase 21 FAW model variants at once. “You can call me a FAW fanatic”, Balil affirms.
FAW’s support has been instrumental in sustaining Metro Towlines’ operations, even amid calls for enhanced aftersales service. Balil lauds dealer representative Harris Moodley: “He’s always willing to help, even late at night”. Osman echoes this sentiment: “It’s because of Harris that we have stuck with FAW”. The company extends gratitude to the FAW support teams and CEO Jian Yang for their ongoing assistance, reinforcing a relationship built on mutual trust.
