WITH a total of 10 688 vehicle sales recorded in the month of May, Toyota remains South Africa’s best-selling automotive brand, thanks in large part to the ever-popular Hilux, which notched up sales of 3 338 units.
Also making meaningful contributions to Toyota’s 24.9% market share in May were segment-leading performances by Quantum (1 482), Fortuner (1 102), RAV4 (705) and Avanza (390). The perennial trio of Corolla/Auris/Quest registered 1 228 units while the Etios amassed a total of 908 sales.
“The fact that 9 222 out of a total sales of 10 688 came through our dealer channel is remarkable,” said Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa.
“Once again, we’re grateful to the entire Toyota team and dealers across the country for their continued efforts towards making Toyota a market leader, but we cannot be complacent because there is always room for improvement. Our mandate is to create customer smiles and to continue making Toyota, Lexus and Hino brands of choice for our market.”
May sales also held steady for a selection of specialist Toyota models, including the Land Cruiser 79 Pick-Up, gaining 217 new owners; as well as the Land Cruiser 200 and Land Cruiser Prado registering sales of 104 and 94, respectively.
On the truck front, Hino's 300 Series achieved 18.3% share of the MCV segment while the 500 Series claimed a 16.5% stake.
Commenting on May sales, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) said the month’s total vehicle sales of 42 984 show an improvement of 1 022 vehicles or 2.4% from the 41 962 vehicles sold in the same month last year.
Overall, out of the total reported Industry sales of 42 984 vehicles, an estimated 37 370 units or 87.0% represented dealer sales, an estimated 7.3% represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 3.7% to industry corporate fleets and 2% to government, Naamsa said.
